San Diego, Calif.- Junior golfer Gunner Wiebe, senior men's basketball player De'Jon Jackson, and sophomore women's basketball player Dominique Conners were named San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for the month of January.
The three USD student-athletes were among 17 individuals named Stars of the Month by the San Diego Hall of Champions, with the recipients stemming from the professional ranks and amateur status, as well as the high school level.
Wiebe qualified for the Farmers Insurance Open after winning the sponsor's exemption that included 100 golfers with a handicap of zero or better. Wiebe, playing in his first PGA event, earned the one amateur spot for the tournament by beating his coach Tim Mickelson by one stroke in an 18-hole playoff on December 5, 2009. The Denver, CO native shot a 1-over par 73 in the opening round on the South Course at the Torrey Pines Golf Course, draining three birdies over his final seven holes. Wiebe followed up the first round performance with a 78 in the second round, missing the cut.
Jackson averaged 12.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.3 steals in the month of January, making 42.6% (29-of-68) of his field goals including 33.3% from three-point range. The Fresno, CA native was an enviable 87% shooter from the free throw line. The 6-0 guard reached double-digits in points in five of the team's seven January games, including a 19-point performance at Santa Clara in a 55-46 victory during the conference opener.
Conners averaged a team-high 17.1 points per game and grabbed 6.1 rebounds. The 5-8 guard never scored less than 12 points during each of the month's seven games and scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games on January 28th and 30th, including a monthly-high of 26 against WCC opponent Pepperdine on the 30th. Conners' performance helped the Toreros reach as high as third in the WCC standings.
During 2009, the Toreros had 13 student-athletes win 15 Stars of the Month awards handed out by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
