The University of San Diego provides a clinical experience for students who are part of the athletic training CAATE accredited professional program at San Diego State University. This clinical experience provides the students with “hands-on” experience in which they apply their athletic training knowledge and skills with an actual athletic population under the direct guidance and supervision of certified athletic trainers/ approved clinical instructors. USD offers an excellent opportunity for students to gain 2 years of clinical experience in which they work along side the certified staff in providing sports medicine services to 16 Division I intercollegiate athletic teams. Working along side the certified staff, team physicians, and athletic department personnel gives the athletic training student actual work experience in the field before they graduate. The athletic training students have benefited tremendously from this important experience and are an invaluable part of the sportsmedicine staff.
