SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 18th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (8-4) pounded out a season-high 23 hits, including Justin Snyder going a perfect 5-for-5, to pound Virginia Commonwealth University (1-2), 20-13, in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium Saturday afternoon.
On top of Snyder's 5-for-5 performance, Logan Gelbrich went 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored and both Josh Romanski and Daniel Magness went 3-for-4. Both Shane Buschini and Jordan Abruzzo each recorded multiple hits on the day as well to help lead the USD offense.
Junior Matt Couch (2-0) was brilliant on the mound for the Toreros in picking up his second win of the season. Couch threw in seven complete innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out a career-high nine batters.
The Toreros used a big eight-run fourth inning to help break open the game. Abruzzo got things going with a lead off walk and moved to second on a balk. Buschini then rocketed his fourth home run of the season to give USD their first two runs of the inning. Gelbrich then kept things going as he singled and moved to second on a pass ball. Romanski moved Gelbrich to third on a single and Magness brought in Gelbrich on a single, which also moved Romanski to third. Kevin Hansen then brought in Romanski on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. The next two Torero runs came on back-to-back bases-loaded walks and the seventh run came on a wild pitch. Gelbrich then drove in the final run with a RBI single to cap the scoring for the inning giving USD a 15-3 lead.
The Rams put on a late rally scoring 10 runs in the final two innings, but the 17-run deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the end.
USD would score four runs in the third inning, three in the sixth inning, two runs in each of the first and fifth innings and one run in the second inning to round off the scoring for the day.
Brett Walker (0-1) took the loss for the Rams as he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.
The Toreros and Rams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
