SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior outfielder AJ Robinson'swalk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning, propelled the University of San Diego baseball team (1-3) to their first ever win in Fowler Park, as USD rallied to defeat Kent State University, 2-1, Friday evening.
With the Toreros trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, USD put on their rally caps, and went to work. Dillon Checkal, who was pinch hitting for Connor Joe, led off the frame with a walk. Two batters later, Dillon Hauptlaced a double down the left field line to drive in Chris Wolley, who was pinch running for Checkal, to knot the score up at 1-1. Then with two outs and Haupt still standing at second base, Robinson stepped to the plate, and quickly went down 0-2. Robinson continued to fight off pitches, and finally connected on one, as he launched a double to left field, which allowed Haupt to score from second and gave USD their first win of the season.
Kent State (0-5) and USD were locked into a pitchers duel right from the get-go, as both starters were dominate this evening. For USD, Michael Wagner allowed one run, while scattering six hits and striking out five batters in his 7.0 innings of work in a no decision. His counterpart, Tyler Skulina, was equally as impressive, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 8.0 innings of work, while registering six strikeouts. In the end, PJ Conlon(1-0) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out three in 2.0 innings of work. KSU's Eric Dorsch (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Golden Flashes, as he allowed two runs on one hit in 0.2 innings of work.
Kent State was able to get onto the scoreboard first, however, as in the top of the seventh inning, right fielder Evan Campbell was able to get a hold of one, and he launched the first home run ever at Fowler Park over the right field fence to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, both Haupt and Robinson led the way, as each player went 1-for-4 with a double, and one RBI.
The Toreros and Golden Flashes will resume their four-game series on Saturday with a double-header at Fowler Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
