SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD baseball team improved to 8-3 on the season with today's impressive 13-3 victory over the Cal State Northridge Matadors in a game played at Tony Gwynn Stadium and SDSU Invitational. Dylan Covey pitched six solid innings as he allowed just five hits and two earned runs to run his season record to 2-1. Leadoff batter Louie Lechich sparked the offensive attack by going 4-for-5 from the plate with 4 runs scored and 1 RBI. Austin Bailey went 3-for-5 with one run and three RBI, and shortstop Andrew Daniel blasted a 2-run homer in the 5th inning.
USD scored two runs in each of the first three innings and crossed the plate at least once in every inning but the 8th. Ten different Toreros collected a total of 16 hits and the Toreros never trailed in the game after taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Lechich opened the game with a leadoff walk and eventually scored the game's first run on Kris Bryant's single to center. Lechich would have a monster day as he banged out doubles in the 2nd and 8th innings, a single in the 4th and triple in the 6th.
