SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a perfect 2-for-2, two home run and four RBI performance from junior All-American Kris Bryant, the University of San Diego baseball team upset No. 10 Cal State Fullerton, 7-3, Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-4 overall, run their winning streak to six and have now won eight of their last nine games. With the loss, the Titans fall to 10-2 overall and have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
San Diego wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as they scored a pair of runs in the first inning on one hit. Chris Woolley was hit by the very first pitch of the half inning to get on first. Woolley then moved to second on passed ball, and two batters later, Bryant unleashed a monster home run over the left field fence to give USD the 2-0 early lead.
The Titans then managed to even the score up in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored a pair of runs on three hits. Matt Chapman led off the frame with a stand-up triple to right center, and he came home on a JD Davis RBI single. The next batter, Michael Lorezen, then drove a RBI triple to right center field again to move the score to 2-2.
San Diego answered back in the bottom half of the fourth inning, as they scored three runs on three hits. Connor Joe led off the frame with a solo home run over the left field fence. Andrew Daniel then drew a walk, and after a CSF pitching change, Austin Green pinch hit for AJ Robinson, and he hit a single off the third base bag to move Daniel all the way to third. After Green moved up one base on a wild pitch, Logan Davis hit an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield, to score Daniel and moved Green to third. Woolley then hit an RBI single to right field to drive in Green, moving the score to 5-2.
USD would then put the game completely out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Bryant launched his second two-run homer over the left field fence to give USD a 7-2 lead.
Fullerton then scored one run in the top of the ninth inning on a Austin Kingsoliver solo home run to right centerfield, putting the game at its final of 7-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bryant led the way going 2-for-2 with two home runs, two walks, and four RBI. Joe also had a great game, as he went 2-fof-3 with a home run and on RBI, while Davis also went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Max Homick (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work, ands stuck out three batters. Fullerton's starter, JD Davis (1-1), was saddled with the loss for the Titans, as he allowed four runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.
