With the Aztecs (6-5) trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, the first two batters reached on walks, two batters later, Vaughn launched a home run over the left centerfield fence to give the Aztecs the 6-4 win.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the 10th inning, James Meador drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sean Nicol then drove in Meador with a RBI single to center field to give the Toreros (7-5) a 4-3 lead.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first as in the first inning the scored one run on a Jomel Torres RBI single to right field.
SDSU then doubled its lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Cory Vaughn RBI single up to give SDSU a 2-0 lead.
The Toreros then responded in the top of the fourth inning with three runs on two hits. Steven Chatwood led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a James Meador single up the middle. The SDSU starting pitcher then committed a balk to move each batter up one base and Sean Nicol made him pay with a two-run double to left field. After Nicol moved to third on a Chris Engell ground out to the pitcher, the Aztecs shortstop made a fielding error, which allowed Nicol to cross the plate and give USD a 3-2 lead.
The Aztecs then took advantage of a pair of USD miscues to even the score in the bottom of the seventh inning. With a runner at first and second and one out, Brandon Decker hit the ball into a possible double play, but USD made the force out at second and over threw the play at first base, and a second throwing error on the same play to third base then allowed the Zach Babitt to score and even the score at 3-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Nicol led the way as he went 3-for-5 with one double and three RBI. Meador also looked solid as e went 2-for-3 with one double.
USD starter Kyle Blair looked impressive on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out nine. AJ Griffin (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed four runs, three earned, on one hit in 3.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they continue the four-game series with the Aztecs at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
