SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego baseball team snapped its five-game skid with a 3-2 victory over 19th-ranked Connecticut on Friday afternoon from Cunningham Stadium. The Toreros (4-8) received timely hitting when they needed it and got solid outings from three different pitchers en route to the win over the Huskies (6-6).
Connecticut got on the board first when designated hitter LJ Mazzilli singled, driving in Mike Nemeth, who had doubled with two outs in the inning two batters earlier.
The Huskies tacked another run on the following inning when John Andreoli picked up an RBI single to left center that plated Doug Elliot and gave Connecticut a 2-0 lead.
The Toreros answered in the bottom of the third when Bryan Haar reached base with two outs on a single. Haar stole second and was later driven in by Zack Kometani, who doubled down the leftfield line, picking up his team-leading 12th RBI of the season.
Trailing 2-1, USD followed that up with two more runs in the fourth as rightfielder Scott Schauer led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. Catcher Zach Sullivan brought Schauer home two batters later with his own double down the leftfield line. After Sullivan stole third, shortstop Julian Duran laid down a bunt on a successful squeeze play that put the Toreros up 3-2.
USD did not relinquish the lead as Paul Paez entered in relief of Torero starter Paul Sewald, who went 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out two. Paez (1-1) got the win after holding the Huskies scoreless in 2.2 innings of work, while allowing three hits and striking out one. Chris Jensen earned his second save of the year when he worked the final two innings without allowing a baserunner and striking out one.
Connecticut's Elliot Glynn (0-3) was saddled with the loss after working six innings and allowing three runs on five hits, while walking four and striking out two.
The Toreros scattered their six hits among six different offensive players, with Kometani, Sullivan and Duran notching RBIs on the day.
The Huskies were led offensively by Andreoli, who went 3-for-4 with a run driven in, while Nemeth added two hits of his own.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Saturday, March 12th with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
