Box Score

HILO, HI - The 21st-ranked University of San Diego baseball team recorded 24 team hits in a 15-0 rout over the University of Hawaii - Hilo Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.

Freshman right-hander Kyle Blair set a new USD single-game strikeout record with 16 in picking up the win on the mound for the Toreros. This breaks Mike Saipe's record of 14 he set back on May 14, 1994 in a game against San Francisco. Blair allowed no runs on two hits in 8.0 innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 12-7 overall, finish the week with a perfect 5-0 record and run their winning streak to five games. With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 7-10 overall.

Both Kevin Muno and Kevin Hansen each went 4-for-5 to lead the USD hit parade on the Vulcans pitching staff. Jose Valerio went 3-for-4 with three RBI and James Meador was the final USD player with three or more hits as he went 3-for-6 with one RBI to lead the Toreros offense on the day.

After San Diego scored four runs in the first inning, the Toreros put the game completely out of reach in the second inning with five runs on five hits. Sean Nicol led off the inning reaching on a fielding error by UHH and he moved to second when Josh Romanski reached on a Vulcan fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Victor Sanchez then hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field fence to give USD their first three runs of the inning. Meador then kept things rolling with a single through the left side and he moved to second on a Hansen single to center field. Valerio then hit a run-scoring double down the right field line to bring in Meador and the final USD run came on a Nick McCoy sacrifice fly to left field to give USD a 9-0 advantage.

The Toreros would go on to score two runs in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh inning to round off the scoring for the day.

The Toreros will return to action on Monday as they conclude a four-game series with the Vulcans in a 3 p.m. game.
