SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior All-American Kris Bryant hit his second walk-off home run of the series in Saturday's thrilling 10-9, 14-inning West Coast Conference win over Brigham Young University at Fowler Park.
After BYU scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 14th inning on a Brock Whitney RBI single, USD didn't buckle, as they put on their rally caps in the bottom half of the 14th inning. Logan Davis led off the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Kris Bryant stepped to the plate, and he unleashed an opposite field homer over the right field fence, to give USD the victory.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-6 overall, and complete a three-game sweep of the Cougars, as they move to 3-0 in WCC play. With the loss, BYU falls to 9-10 overall and 0-3 in the WCC.
BYU struck first, as they managed to score three runs in the top of the first inning. The BYU runs came on an Adam Law RBI single, a Whitney RBI single and a Bret Lopez RBI groundout to give the visitors the early momentum.
USD then responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Connor Joe hit into a double play, which scored the first run, and the final run came on a Jerod Smith RBI single to move the score to 3-2.
The wild game continued as BYU would score two runs in the third, one in the sixth and two in the ninth, while USD scored one in the second, two in the sixth and seventh innings, and a Connor Joe solo home run in the top of the ninth sent this game into extra innings, setting up the exciting finish in the 14th inning.
Offensively for the Toreros, Smith led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Andrew Daniel also had a good game at the plate, as he went 3-for-5 with one run scored and all but three Toreros who stepped to the plate recorded at least one hit in the team total of 22.
Sheldon Ekstrand (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work. BYU's Keaton Cenatiempo (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume WCC play on the road against Gonzaga University. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
