SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (7-19) dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 16 UC Irvine (19-6) Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
The Anteaters scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. Drew Hillman got things started with a single through the left side and moved to second on a Sean Madigan ground out to the pitcher. Ronnie Shaeffer then drove in Hillman with a RBI single to centerfield. Jordan Leyland then singled and Christian Ramirez drove in the final two runs on a bases-clearing triple to give UCI a 3-0 lead.
USD had one of its best scoring opportunity come in the fifth inning. With two outs, Julian Duran was hit by a pitch and he moved to third on Kevin Muno's double down the right field line. But USD could not push across a run as the next batter grounded out to the shortstop to end the scoring threat.
Irvine then added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning on a Brian Hernandez sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring D.J. Crumlich, who walked, and a bases-loaded bunt RBI single by Shaeffer to put the game at its final of 5-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, Muno, Dillon Checkal, Zack Kometani and Tony Strazzara all recorded one hit.
Max MacNabb (0-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed three runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work. UCI's Crosby Slaught (4-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Anteaters, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 3.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they open West Coast Conference play at No. 24 Gonzaga University with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
