MORAGA, Calif. - Behind a 4-for-5 one double and two RBI performance from James Meador, the 24th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team claimed a 9-7 win over Saint Mary's College Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 25-15 overall, move to 8-4 in the WCC and avoid a three-game sweep. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 23-18 overall and 5-7 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first as they scored one run in the first inning. Sean Nicol led off the inning with single up the middle and moved to second on a Chris Engell ground out to the second baseman. James Meador then drove in Nicol with a RBI single to right field to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Gaels then responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The SMC runs came on Troy Channing run-scoring double, a Kyle Jensen run-scoring triple and a pass ball to take a 3-1 lead.
The Toreros then took back the lead in the top of the second inning by scoring four runs on three hits. Brian Farris got things started with a single through the left side and advanced to second when Jon Hotta reached on a SMC fielding error. After Jose Valerio loaded the bases with a walk, Nicol drove in Farris with a sacrifice fly to right field. Engell then drove in the next two runs with a two-run double and Meador drove in the final run on a double to right field to give USD a 5-3 lead.
The Gales then regained the lead with three runs in their half of the second inning with three runs on four hits. The SMC runs came on an Anthony Aliotti two-run single and a Channing RBI single to give the Gales a 6-5 lead.

USD kept the offensive pressure on as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning on a Nicol three-run homer to give USD an 8-6 lead.
The Toreros then added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning on a Steven Chatwood RBI single, which scored Meador, who had singled, to give USD a 9-6 lead.
The Gaels then scored one run in their half of the fourth inning on an Aliotti solo home run to put the game at its final of 9-7.
Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 4-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Nicol and had a solid day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI.
Matt Hauser (3-1) was credited with the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Taylor Reid was saddled with the loss for the Gaels, as he allowed four runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work.
USD will return to action on Tuesday as they head to Fullerton to take on the Titans of Cal State Fullerton in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
