PORTLNAD Ore. - The University of San Diego baseball team evened its West Coast Conference series with the University of Portland Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory at Joe Etzel Field.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first as they scored one run on two hits in the top of the third inning. Dillon Haupt got things started when he was hit by a pitch, and he moved to second on a Julian Duran single to right field. Lucas Hagberg then drove in Haupt with an RBI single to left field, giving the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
The Pilots then evened the score in the top of the fourth inning as they scored one run on a Lucarelli RBI single to move the score to 1-1.
USD then dug in and again went to work in the top of the seventh inning scoring one to regain the lead. Louie Lechich got things started as he drew a walk and he moved to second on a Duran sacrifice bunt. Corey LeVier then drove in Lechich with a RBI single to give the Toreros a 2-1 edge.
USD then added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning on a Lechich RBI single to put the game at its final of 3-1.
Paul Sewald (7-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed one run on eight hits, while striking out three in 6.0 innings of work. Michael Wagner then came on and picked up his nation-leading 19th save of the season allowing no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they play a rubber game with the Pilots at 1 p.m.
