Toreros Drop Heartbreaker to Sun Devils in 11th Inning

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 4 Arizona State University defeated the University of San Diego baseball team, 8-7, in 11 innings Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Packard Stadium

With the game tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the 11th inning, ASU was able to push across the winning run on a Zack MacPhee RBI single, which scored Jared McDonald, who had walked, to give the Sun Devils the win.

The Toreros (27-22) got on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run on two hits. Zach Walters led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second when Nick McCoy drew a walk. Bryan Haar then drove in Walters on a RBI single to left field to give USD the early 1-0 lead.

The Sun Devils (34-11) then responded with a pair of runs in bottom of the second inning. The ASU runs came on a Kole Calhoun solo home run on a Matt Newman RBI single up the middle to give ASU a 2-1 lead.

USD then evened the score in the top of the third inning as they scored one run on two hits. Sean Nicol got things stared with a single through the left side and moved to second on a wild pitch. Walters drove in Nicol with a RBI single up the middle to knot the score at 2-2.

The Toreros then regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a Tony Strazzara RBI single and a ASU fielding error to give USD a 4-2 lead.

The Sun Devils then took back a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded Newman walk to move the score to 4-3.

San Diego added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning by scoring three runs on three hits. Nicol got things started with a single through the left side and moved to second on a Walters single to left field. McCoy then launched a three-run homer over the left centerfield fence to give USD a 7-3 advantage.

 

 

Arizona State then took back another run in their half of the seventh inning on a USD fielding error to cut the lead to three at 7-4.

The Sun Devils continued to chip away at the lead, taking back two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The ASU runs came on a Zack MacPhee solo home run and a Jason Kipnis RBI single to move the score to 7-6.

ASU then forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth, as they scored one run on a MacPhee RBI single to knot the score at 7-7.

Offensively for the Toreros, Nicol, Walters and Haar all went 3-for-5 with Walters and Haar each driving in a run to lead the offense.

Darrin Campbell (3-5) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Matt Newman (3-5) picked up the win for the Sun Devils, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. as they conclude a two-game series with the Sun Devils.
