STOCKTON, Calif. - Austin Bailey hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the University of San Diego baseball team to a wild 9-8 win over Brigham Young University Thursday evening in the West Coast Conference Tournament.
With the game knotted at 8-all heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, USD put on their rally caps and went to work. With one out, Kris Bryant singled to left field. Dillon Checkal then drew a walk, and Bailey stepped to the plate and laced a RBI single down the right field line to score Bryant and move USD into the winners bracket.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 33-22 overall and will move on to the winners bracket and play the University of San Francisco at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 31-20 overall, and will move on to play in the losers bracket and take on Gonzaga on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
The Cougars wasted no time in scoring, as they took advantage of a USD fielding error to score an unearned run in the top of the first. Jacob Hanneman led off the game with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by USD. Adam Law then drove in Hannemann with a RBI ground out to the second baseman to give BYU 1-0 lead.
San Diego answered right back in the bottom of the first, as Bryant led off the frame with a 4-pitch walk. Two batters later, Bailey then hit a run-scoring double to right centerfield, scoring Bryant from first to move the score to 1-1.
USD then took the lead with a one-run bottom of the second inning. Andrew Daniel led off the inning with a single, and he moved to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Louie Lechich then moved Daniel to third on a groundout and Lucas Hagberg walked to give USD runners at the corners. Logan Davis then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Daniel from third and give USD a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars then took the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer by Bret Lopez, which scored Jaycob Brugman, who had singled, to move the score to 3-2.
The Toreros then broke open the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on six hits. Daniel led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. Hagberg then singled to right center, and stole second. Troy Conyers then singled to left field. Bryant then drew another 4-pith walk to load the bases. Dillon Haupt was then inserted as a pinch hitter, and he hit a grand slam to left field to score the next four runs. Bailey kept things going as he reached on an infield single, and he moved to second when Connor Joe reached on an error. Austin Green then hit an RBI single to cap the scoring for the inning and giving USD an 8-3 lead.
BYU answered right back with a five-run top of the seventh inning to even the score at 8-all. The Cougars' runs came on a Law RBI single, RBI doubles by Brugman and Caldwell, a Hernandez RBI single to even the score at 8-all.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Haupt went 1-for-1 with a grand slam and four RBI.
Max Homick (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. BYU's Matt Mikle (3-2) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed one run on two hits in 3.0 innings of work.
