SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior All-American Brian Matusz of the ninth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team has been named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. This marks the third time this season, Matusz has received this honor.
Matusz, a 6-4 left-hander from Cave Creek, Ariz., helped lead USD to a share of the WCC Championship on Friday as he allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out 14 in 8.1 innings of work on Friday. This marked the fifth time this season that Matusz has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game. Overall, Matusz is 10-2 with a 2.05 ERA and has a team-best 122 strikeouts.
Matusz and the Toreros will take this week off to concentrate on finals before hosting the WCC championship series on May 23-25 at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
