(San Diego, CA) - Torero standouts LH Justin Blaine and SS Steve Singleton were named top professional prospects by Baseball America after turning in outstanding performances for their respective summer league club teams. Singleton, assigned to North Carolina's Thomasville Hi-Toms, was named the Coastal Plain League's No. 3 overall prospect. Playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League, Blaine was an All-Star pick for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox after posting a 2.53 ERA and registering 56 K's in 46-plus innings. Both Blaine and Singleton highlight a proven group of Torero players returning for the 2005 spring season. Singleton, who will most likely be called upon to fill USD's vacant shortstop position left by All-WCC infielder Jose Ortega, used 150 offseason at-bats to belt seven homers, register a .327 average and drive in 27 runs. Singleton, a sophomore from Oakland and Bishop O'Dowd High School, was named the Hi-Toms' team MVP. Singleton and USD teammate Shane Buschini, both playing with Thomasville, were recognized as Coastal Plain League All-Stars.

Blaine (Westlake Village, CA) was a Cape Cod League All-Star

Blaine, a 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher from Westlake, was the No. 23 overall prospect in arguably the most celebrated of all collegiate summer leagues. Baseball America boasts that its Cape Cod League prospect rankings often resemble the top of the subsequent major league baseball draft list. Blaine, San Diego's top returning pitcher, has 110 strikeouts in two full collegiate seasons. For complete prospect rankings please visit www.baseballamerica.com
