MALIBU, Calif- The University of San Diego men's basketball team (10-8, 3-0) defeated Pepperdine (9-8, 1-3) 62-50 on the road Saturday evening to win their fourth consecutive game.
The Toreros, fueled by a strong defensive effort, were in control of this game from the beginning. USD forced the Waves into 18 turnovers and held them to 41.9% shooting.
USD never trailed in the game and pulled away with an 11-0 run midway through the first half to build a 23-10 lead. The Toreros would hold a double-digit lead for much of the remainder of the game. The closest Pepperdine got was when they pulled within six at 47-41 with 4:48 left. However Johnny Dee was too much down the stretch for the Waves, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the final five minutes.
The Toreros were led by Dee's 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Senior Ken Rancifer added 16 points for the Toreros, while seniors Cameron Miles and Chris Manresa each chipped in eight points.
With the win, the Toreros remain perfect in WCC play at 3-0. They are one of three teams in the conference that remain undefeated (No. 8 Gonzaga and BYU), and they will look to continue their win streak Wednesday evening against Loyola Marymount (8-8, 1-2) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsNet as well as aired on the Mighty 1090.
