(San Diego, CA) - The USD Toreros won their third straight game with a convincing 88-65 home win over Arizona Christian at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Senior forward Ken Rancifer scored a career-high 27 points as he made 10-of-12 shots overall, including 6-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc, in just 22 minutes of action. With the win the Toreros take a record of 6-5 into Saturday's contest at Viejas Arena against the San Diego State Aztecs.
In the first half both teams got off to slow starts as the game was tied at 8-all at the 13:41 mark. Over the next 4:19 the Toreros strung together a 10-0 run that ended with a Rancifer free throw and from there the closest the visiting ACU Firestorm would get is 7 points at 23-16 on a three-pointer from Mike Navar. Over the final 7 minutes of the first half the Toreros closed with a 24-11 run. Rancifer had 17 points by the break as the Toreros made 58.1% of their shots from the floor and 6-of-12 three-pointers.
In the second half the Toreros extended their lead to as many as 32 points (74-42) with 9:44 to go with Coach Grier having the luxury to get some of his reserves some increased minutes on the floor. Besides Rancifer, junior guard Mike Davis also chipped in with a new career-high of 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Sophomore guard Johnny Dee added 11 points, and point guard Christopher Anderson had two key steals in the first half to spark USD's run, and dished off 8 assists for the game. Senior forward Chris Manresa and sophomore forward John Sinis each grabbed a team-high 7 boards.
For the game the Toreros shot a season-best 60.0% from the floor (36-60), while connecting on 8-of-17 three-pointers. USD also dominated the glass as they held a 42-26 advantage against the smaller Firestorm. Arizona Christian (4-1) was paced by guard Mason Jones with 20 points and guard Jordan Block (14 points).
Following Saturday's game at San Diego State, the Toreros will play two games in Las Vegas against Oregon State (Dec. 22) and James Madison (Dec. 23) before returning to the JCP against Morgan State on Dec. 29th at 7:30 pm.
