Sept. 13, 2013
The University of San Diego men's basketball staff, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Bill Grier, announced their 2013-14 schedule today. The Toreros will open up their 13-game non-conference slate with two home games in their own USD Classic they will host November 8-9. On Friday, November 8th, the Toreros will take on South Dakota State in the second game at 7:00 p.m., with Loyola Marymount and Grand Canyon kicking off the two-day event at 4:30 pm USD will face Grand Canyon on Saturday in the second contest at 6:00 pm.
"We are looking forward to the challenge of our schedule," said head coach Bill Grier. "I feel our team has a better understanding of how important success in both non-conference and WCC play is to our goal of post-season play. The home opener versus South Dakota State will be a tough game. They are a program coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances as well as winning at New Mexico last season. Our road trip back east is a return to teams that we beat last season at home, but both games were very close. We have very tough games at New Mexico and home versus SDSU...arguably the two best teams in the Mountain West Conference. Santa Barbara returns with a team picked by many to challenge UC Irvine and Long Beach State for the Big West title. We also play in a very competitive eight-team MTE in Naples, Florida. Overall our schedule is challenging and will prepare us for WCC play."
The Toreros will head to the east coast in mid-November for road games at Morgan State (Nov. 14) and Northern Kentucky (Nov. 16). Following that trip USD will take part in the Gulf Coast Showcase (Nov. 25-27) at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida . As part of that tournament, USD will host San Diego Christian in a preliminary game on Nov. 21st before heading east for three games in the eight-team MTE event. The Toreros will open against Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 25th, and then play either Louisiana Tech or UNC-Greensboro on Nov. 26th. Their final game will be against one of four possible opponents - Wagner, Stetson, St. Bonaventure or Southern Illinois. On their way back USD will make a stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a contest at The Pit against the New Mexico Lobos.
In December the Toreros will close out their nonconference schedule with four straight home games at the Jenny Craig Pavilion - San Diego State (Dec. 5), Pacifica (Dec. 10), UC Santa Barbara (Dec. 15) and Southern Utah (Dec. 21). With the addition of the University of the Pacific making the West Coast Conference a ten- team league, WCC play will begin before the New Year on December 28th. In the first half of league play, USD will play seven of their first nine games on the road, beginning with Pepperdine (Dec. 28), and followed by Loyola Marymount (Dec. 30) and BYU (Jan. 4). After hosting LMU (Jan. 9) and Pepperdine (Jan. 11), the Toreros will play four straight road games at Santa Clara (Jan. 16), San Francisco (Jan. 18), Gonzaga (Jan. 23, ESPNU) and Portland (Jan. 25).
The second half of league play will see the Toreros host seven of their final nine WCC contests. Kicking it off will be an ESPNU match-up with Saint Mary's College on January 30th, followed by UOP (Feb. 1), San Francisco (Feb. 6) and Santa Clara (Feb. 8). Following road contests at Saint Mary's (Feb. 13, ESPNU) and UOP (Feb. 15), the Toreros will close out their regular-season with three straight at the JCP against Portland (Feb. 20), Gonzaga (Feb. 22, ESPN2) and BYU (Mar. 1st).
The 2014 WCC Basketball Championships will once again be played at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 6-11. Two opening round games will be played on March 6th (6 & 8 pm); four quarterfinals games will be played on March 8th (12, 2, 6, & 8 pm); two semifinal games will be played on March 10th (6 & 8 pm); with the championship game coming on Tuesday, March 11th (6pm, ESPN).
The Toreros return 3 starters (Johnny Dee, Christopher Anderson, and Dennis Kramer) and 7 lettermen from last year's squad that finished 16-18 and 7-9 in WCC play. Additionally, USD will have 3 redshirts back from a year ago and welcomes 2 new scholarship student-athletes (Brett Bailey & Chris Sarbaugh). USD's first official practice will be on September 28th, and on October 26th the Toreros will host Cal State Monterey Bay in an exhibition at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 6:00 pm.
