GAME #13: The USD Toreros (8-4) close out their four-game homestand by hosting the the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (1-7) on Saturday, December 21st. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Toreros beat Southern Utah 67-53
(Cedar City, UT) - The USD Toreros closed out their four-game road swing with a hard-fought 67-53 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (2-6) Tuesday night. USD's sophomore backcourt of Johnny Dee (17 points) and Christopher Anderson (13 points) led the way offensively for the Toreros. The win snapped USD's 3-game skid and improves their season mark to 4-5 heading into Saturday's home contest with Tulane (7-2) at 6pm.
This will be the 11th meeting between USD and Southern Utah with the Toreros owning a perfect 10-0 mark against the Thunderbirds... The Toreros won last year's meeting in Cedar City, Utah by the score of 67-53... Johnny Dee
(17 points) and Christopher Anderson
(13 points) led the way.

A LOOK AHEAD: Following Christmas the Toreros open up West Coast Conference play on the road at Pepperdine (Dec. 28th, 5:00 p.m.) and LMU (Dec. 30th, 7pm).
COACH GRIER (7TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his seventh season at the helm of the USD program... He has this squad off to a 8-4 start, and its 7-1 mark thru the first eight games was only matched by the 2000-01 Torero team since San Diego joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... Last year's squad finished 16-18 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament where they just missed out on advancing to the title game... The Toreros were playing their best basketball down the stretch highlighted by two wins over BYU.
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros will be gunning for their 9th win in nonconference play when they line up against Southern Utah on Saturday... The last Torero team to enter WCC play with 9 wins or more was the 2006-07 ball club (9-5)... Through games of Dec. 15th, USD ranked in the top-20 in NCAA Division I stats for three-point field goal percentage defense (#13, .263), overall field goal percentage defense (#14, .377) and scoring defense (#18, 61.5 ppg)... With 1,152 career points, junior guard Johnny Dee ranks 17th all-time on USD's scoring list - his next targets are #16 Cliff Ashford (1963-66) with 1,164 points and #15 Ken Leslie with 1,174 points (1956-59)... Dee also owns 194 made three-pointers on 498 attempts (38.9%); the Torero record for made threes in a career is 228 by Ross DeRogatis (2004-07) on 551 attempts (41.3%)... Through Dec. 15th Dee ranked 5th in the nation in 3-point attempts (99) and 10th overall for made threes (35)... Junior guard Christopher Anderson moved into the 4th spot all-time for Toreros in the assist department at 420... Sitting at #3 is USD Hall of Famer Stan Washington (451; 1971-74), while #2 is current Miami Heat assistant coach David Fizdale (465, 1992-96)... USD has started the same lineup in all twelve games so far (Dee, Anderson, Duda Sanadze, Jito Kok and Dennis Kramer)... They have accounted for 709 of the team's 856 points (82.8%)... Four of the starters are averaging in double-digit scoring - Dee (17.8 ppg), Sanadze (12.8 ppg), Anderson (11.3 ppg) and Kramer (11.0 ppg)... Kramer leads the team in rebounding (7.2) and is followed in that department by Thomas Jacobs (4.8 rpg) off the bench...In USD's split last week against Pacifica (84-47 win) and UC Santa Barbara (72-61 loss), senior forward Dennis Kramer averaged a double-double in points (19.0 ppg) and rebounds (12.0 rpg)... Against Pacifica he totaled games highs with 21 points and 13 rebounds, and he followed that up with a solid game against the Gauchos (17 points & 11 rebounds)... He was followed by Dee (17.0 ppg) and Sanadze (13.0 ppg) in the scoring for the two contests... Against Pacifica all thirteen Toreros saw action with everyone contributing in the scoring column... Over the past five games in which USD has gone 2-3, four Toreros have averaged in double-digit scoring - Dee (19.4 ppg), Sanadze (12.6 ppg), Anderson (10.6 ppg) and Kramer (10.2 ppg)... During that same 5-game stretch USD has averaged 66.8 points and 38.0 rebounds while surrendering 62.6 ppg and 32.6 rpg on average to its opponents.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Toreros own a 4-2 record in the Jenny Craig Pavilion this season... USD owns wins over South Dakota State (74-70), Grand Canyon (70-59), San Diego Christian (82-46) and Pacifica (84-47); the two losses have come to #24 San Diego State (65-64) and UC Santa Barbara (72-61)... Through six home games USD is being paced by Johnny Dee (18.3 ppg), Duda Sanadze (12.5 ppg), Dennis Kramer (12.2), and Christopher Anderson (10.3 ppg)... The Toreros are averaging 72.5 points while limiting their opponents to 59.8 ppg... USD is also shooting 47.0% from the floor (165-351) while holding their opponents to 36.4% shooting (118-324).
SCOUTING THE SOUTHERN UTAH THUNDERBIRDS: Southern Utah will come to the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday looking to snap a seven game losing streak... On Wednesday night they suffered a 76-39 loss at #24 San Diego State... Following a season opening win over Arizona Christian (85-78), the youthful Thunderbirds have dropped contests at Utah State (90-57), at Cal (75-47), vs. UC Riverside (74-59), at Portland (86-57), at Cal State Northridge (84-57), vs. UNLV (73-51) and to the Aztecs... Against SDSU they found themselves down 41-11 at the half before getting untracked in the second half... Freshman guard Trey Kennedy was the lone SUU player in double-digits with 10 points... Through eight games Kennedy is the lone Thunderbird averaging in double digits at 11.8 points per game ... For the season SUU is averaging 56.5 points per game and giving up 79.5 ppg... Sophomore forward Casey Oliverson leads the team in rebounding with his 4.9 rpg average... SUU, a member of the Big Sky Conference, is under the direction of second year head coach Nick Robinson (Stanford, 2005).
