Tanner Engstrand completed his sixth season with the Toreros in 2010 and his second as the quarterbacks coach. For the upcoming 2011 campaign, Engstrand has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator and will continue to coach Torero quarterbacks. This past season, besides his QB duties, he was the program's Passing Game Coordinator.

During the 2007 & 2008 seasons he served as the running backs coach and in 2008 he helped guide freshman running backs Phil Morelli and Matt Jelmini to 2nd team all conference and honorable mention, respectively, in place of injured starter JT Rogan. The two combined to rush for 1305 yards and 9 touchdowns. In his first season as the running backs coach the Toreros rushing attack averaged 185.8 yard per game and was led by junior JT Rogan who finished with 1,021 yards and 10 touchdowns. In 2008 in addition to his running back duties he was also the Director of Football Operations.

In 2005 and 2006 Tanner was an offensive assistant for the Toreros who finished with an 11-1 record both years. As an offense, the Toreros ranked first in the nation in total offense and scoring in 2006. During his time at USD the Toreros have garnered a 40-6 record.

Prior to coming to USD Engstrand was a two year letterman at San Diego State University (2003-2004) where he played quarterback. Before enrolling at SDSU he was a First Team All Foothill Conference and Academic All-American quarterback at Grossmont College in El Cajon California during the 2002 season.

Engstrand graduated with his bachelor's degree in Economics from SDSU in 2005 and also earned his masters degree in Business Administration from USD in December 2007.
