SAN DIEGO - Senior wide receiver John Matthews set two school receiving records and junior quarterback Sebastian Trujillo threw four touchdown passes to lead the University of San Diego (8-2, 6-2 PFL) football team to a 34-17 Pioneer Football League win over Butler (6-4, 4-3 PFL) on Saturday night at USD's Torero Stadium.

Trujillo threw a pair of touchdowns to Matthews, who caught a school-record 14 passes for 187 yards. Matthews also set the San Diego single-season receiving yardage record with 1,317. Trujillo completed 22-of-31 passes for 258 yards and had one interception. Matt Jelmini had 14 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown.

The Toreros scored first, as with their second possession of the game, Trujillo capped off a 12-play 77 yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Ben Hannula to put USD up 7-0.

San Diego then doubled their lead when Matthews caught his first of two touchdowns on the evening, a 5-yard reception from Trujillo, capping off a 3-play 46 yard drive to give USD a 14-0 advantage with 11:34 remaining in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs then responded with 10 points of their own in the second quarter to cut the lead to four at 14-10 going into halftime. Butler scored its 10 points on a Jordan Quirox 28-yard field goal and a Matt Kobli 1-yard TD run that capped off a 10 play 82-yard drive for the Bulldogs.

San Diego then responded in the third quarter with a 4-play 67-yard drive that resulted in a Hannula 8-yard TD reception from Trujillo with 10:54 remaining in the quarter. USD would then go up by 17 with 6:29 remaining in the game on a Matthews 30-yard TD reception from Trujillo to put USD comfortably ahead 27-10.

 

 

After Butler cut the lead to 10 on a Dan Bohrer 23-yard TD reception, San Diego would cap off their scoring for the evening on a Jelmini 14-yard TD run with 2:46 to go, putting the game at its final of 34-17.

Defensively USD was paced by Loka Kanongataa (11 stops) and Derek Pilkington (4 stops). For the game USD totaled 439 yards of offense to Butler's 322.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday as they host UC Davis in the season finale at Torero Stadium.
