Seven Toreros named to 2007 Sports Network FCS All-America squads

(San Diego, CA) - The USD football team had a total of seven players earn recognition on the 2007 Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision All-America squad that was announced recently. Senior defensive end Eric Bakhtiari (Burlingame, CA) and senior return specialist JT Rogan (Coronado, CA) were both named to the First Team. Senior QB Josh Johnson (Oakland, CA) was named to the Third Team for the second straight year. Bakhtiari led the nation in pass sacks with 20 while Rogan led the nation in kickoff returns (33.2 yards per return average). Johnson, who finished 3rd in the Walter Payton Award voting, passed for 43 touchdowns with just 1 interception and led the nation in total offense, passing efficiency and points responsible for.

Toreros that were recognized as honorable mention (10 or more votes) included senior WR Wes Doyle (Phoenix, AZ), junior WR John Matthews (Littleton, CO), senior offensive center Jordan Paopao (Oceanside, CA), and senior offensive guard Gabe DeAnda (Lakewood, CO). Doyle tied a school record with 73 receptions, and finished with 926 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns; Matthews set a new school record with 16 touchdowns and averaged 23.1 yards per catch (47 for 1,088). USD finished 9-2 overall under first year coach Ron Caragher and earned a share of the PFL championship with Dayton.
