Ron Caragher Announces USD Football Coaching Staff

(San Diego, CA) - USD head football coach Ron Caragher, who was named USD's head football coach on January 9th, has completed his staff for the 2007 season. He has retained six coaches from last year's 11-1 team, and is bringing in four new assistants. Coaches returning include Dave Adolph (Asst. Head Coach, Def. Coordinator, Linebackers), Ed Lamb (Recruiting Coordinator, Defensive Backs, co-Special Teams Coordinator), Jimmie Dougherty (Passing Game Coordinator, Quarterbacks), Mike Rish (Wide Receivers), Coleman Hutzler (Defensive Assistant), and Tanner Engstrand (Offensive Assistant). New hires to the program include Jay Graham (Running Backs, co-Special Teams Coordinator), Todd Washington (Offensive Line), Mike Babcock (Tight Ends, Football Operations), and Jon Sumrall (Defensive Line).

"I am excited about the new coaching staff we have assembled here at USD," said first year coach Ron Caragher. "In addition to being excellent teachers, they bring a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to the program. Each one of them will be an outstanding representative of our football program and our university."

Jay Graham, who will be the running backs coach and co-Special Teams Coordinator, comes to USD from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he was the running backs coach since January, 2006. Prior to that he was a graduate assistant for offense at the University ofTennessee, beginning in the summer of 2003. He played six seasons in the NFL with three different teams - Baltimore Ravens (1997-2000), Seattle Seahawks (2001-2002) and the Green Bay Packers (2002). He earned his B.A. degree in Psychology from Tennessee in 2004, and is close to completing his Masters of Sport Management degree.

Todd Washington, who will be the offensive line coach, joins the Torero staff after an 8-year playing career in the NFL. Washington, a 4th round pick by Tampa Bay in 1998, played five seasons with the Buccaneers (1998-2003), including the 2002 Super Bowl XXXVII Championship team. He closed out his career with the Houston Texans (2003-2005). Played four years at Virginia Tech University (1994-97) where he earned All-Big East 1st team honors in 1997 and appeared in the Senior Bowl (1998). Washington earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education and Health in 1998. He was a coaching intern (August, 2006) for East Texas Baptist University and for the Amsterdam Admirals (February, 2006) at their NFL Europe Training Camp.

Mike Babcock, who will be the tight ends coach and football operations director, comes to USD from the University of Colorado. The past two seasons he was the offensive quality control intern after joining the program in June 2005. Prior to CU he was at UCLA, his alma mater, for five seasons as a member of the coaching staff. He spent three years (2002-04) as a graduate assistant coach after working the two previous years as an undergraduate assistant coach with both the offense and the defense. He played three seasons as an inside linebacker at UCLA, and was a member of the Bruins' 1997 and 1998 Pacific-10 Conference championship teams, which played in the Cotton and Rose bowls, respectively. He earned his B.A. degree in Sociology from UCLA in 2002, and his M.A. in Education in 2004.

Jon Sumrall, who will be the defensive line coach, was with Caragher the past two seasons at the University of Kentucky. He was a defensive graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, aiding the UK defensive staff and helping them this past season to an 8-5 record and Music City Bowl win over Clemson. Additionally he had lead responsibility in breaking down opponent film, organizing scouting reports, handling "self scout" of UK tendencies, and running the offensive scout team. Sumrall was a three-year letterman for the Wildcats from 2002-04. His best season for UK was in 2004 when he led the team in tackles with 72 from his linebacker position. He completed his B.A. degree in finance and is currently working on a master's degree in sports leadership.
