(San Diego, CA) - Senior quarterback Mason Mills (Coronado, Calif.) and freshman punter Ryan Belden (Diamond Bar, Calif.) were honored by the Pioneer Football League as players of the week for their performances in Saturday's 42-14 home victory over Butler. Mills, who was selected co-Offensive Player of the Week with Chuck Looney of Marist, completed 26-of-36 passes for 407 yards and 5 touchdowns. In leading USD to a 35-7 halftime advantage, Mills had totals of 15-for-19 passing for 297 yards with touchdown throws of 7 yards to Brandon White, 40 yards to Reggie Bell and 54 yards to Sam Hoekstra. His 54-yarder to Hoekstra also made him just the 5th PFL passer to reach the 10,000 yards milestone.
Belden helped keep the Butler Bulldogs bottled up all afternoon, averaging 46.0 yards on four kicks in the victory. He had two punts go for 50 or more yards, including a 59-yard bomb from his own end zone, and two punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Belden also had a 50-yard punt that was downed inside the Butler 10-yard line. His final punt was his shortest, a 32-yard boot that was fair-caught inside the Butler 20-yard line,
Through 8 games this season Mills leads all PFL passers in total offense (308.2), passing yards per game (321.0) and pass efficiency (169.0 rating). Belden leads the PFL in punting with his 43.7 average. Included in his 31 punts on the season is an 80-yarder, 11 inside the opponent's 20-yard line and 7 of 50 yards or more.
The Toreros (4-1 PFL, 5-3 overall) play at Valparaiso this Saturday, November 2nd, at 11 a.m. (PDT). With three games to go, San Diego is currently tied for first place with Dayton, Butler and Marist with identical 4-1 marks.
