Toreros heading to Oklahoma Regional for fifth straight post-season bid
Cory Scoggin is wrapping up his second year with the Toreros. USD takes a national ranking of 72nd into the 2013 WCC Championships. The Toreros placed first at the Bill Cullum Invitational (16 teams) back in October, along with two third place finishes (Topy Cup & ASU Thunderbird Invitational).
Last year was Cory's first year as head coach after being top assistant for four seasons for Tim Mickelson who took a similar position with Arizona State University. Scoggin guided the Toreros into the NCAA Championship with a trip to the Oklahoma Regional (May 17-19). The Toreros, ranked 61st, won the Kauai Collegiate Invitational, were runner-up at the North Ranch Intercollegiate, and own eight top-5 finishes out of 12 tournaments.
Two seasons ago Scoggin completed his fourth year with the USD program as an assistant coach to Mickelson. He helped lead the Toreros to their first WCC championship (2008), 4 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, and 3 consecutive NCAA National Championship appearances finishing 13th in 2009, 9th in 2010 and 16th in 2011.
"We are pleased to announce Cory Scoggin as the new head coach of our golf program," said Mike Matoso, Senior Associate Director of Athletics. "Cory has been involved with the progress of the team for the last 4 seasons and has been instrumental in the team participating in 3 straight NCAA Nationals. I have no question Cory will continue what him and Coach Mickelson built together. He will continue to bring in well rounded student athletes that want to compete at the national level while receiving one of the best educations in the country."
This past season the Toreros won two tournaments and finished in the top-5 in nine of twelve events. The season was highlighted by team titles at the Wolf Pack Classic and Kauai Collegiate. The Toreros hosted the NCAA West Regional's at The Farms Golf Club and placed 3rd (13 teams) to advance to their third straight NCAA National Championship. Alex Ching, who will be a senior in 2011-12, was named the 2011 West Coast Conference Player of the Year.
The 2009-10 Toreros won five tournaments - the Kauai Collegiate Invitational, the USD Callaway Invitational for the first time, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational, and a tie at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic. Additionally they had five other top-five showings including 2nd place finishes at the WCC Championships and Wolf Pack Classic.
During the 2008 Fall campaign the Toreros tallied three top-5 finishes in their five tournaments, including a first place title at the Kaua'i Collegiate where they won by 15 strokes. USD also placed third at the Sycuan Collegiate, and tied for fifth at the San Francisco Intercollegiate. The 2009 spring campaign was capped off by the Toreros advancing out of the NCAA West Regional's, then turning in a strong showing at their first-ever National appearance with a 13th place finish out of 30 teams.
In his first campaign (2007-08) he helped guide the Toreros to six top-5 finishes, including the program's first-ever West Coast Conference championship. The Toreros advanced to the 2008 NCAA West Regional's, marking their second trip in three years.
During the 2006-07 season Cory was the interim head coach for the men's golf team at Cal State San Marcos. He directed the team to 2nd place finishes at three tournaments - the Bill Collum Invitational, Pala Mesa Invitational and their very own Cal State San Marcos Invitational. The team finished 5th at Regional's and advanced to Nationals where they placed 14th.
Scoggin competed at Cal State San Marcos where in 2003-04 he was a First Team All-American. During his senior year the team won the Cal State San Marcos Invitational and Grand Canyon Invitational. At Regional's, the team finished 2nd as Scoggin shot 6 under par for the tournament and was named Region II Golfer of the Year. In 1999 he earned his B.A. in Visual and Performing Arts, Arts and Technology Track from Cal State San Marcos in 2004. He owns an Associate of Applied Business Degree from the San Diego Golf Academy. He currently is a Class A member with the PGA of America.
From Carbondale, Colorado, Cory attended Roaring Fork High School where he competed on the golf team.
