(Lakeside, CA) - (Lakeside, CA) - The USD Toreros turned in a strong showing at the Barona Collegiate Cup as they finished in 3rd place overall in the 12 team event. USD's team total of 851 was two strokes better than Oklahoma State, the 5th ranked team in the nation. Texas A&M ran away with the tourney (827) while host SDSU edged out the Toreros at 847. "The guys are really starting to gel together and are realizing how good they can be," said head coach Tim Mickelson. "I told them at the beginning of the year that we were talented enough to be a top 30 team in the country. I think they are finally realizing and seeing what I saw in them as a team. The rest of the spring should be exciting." Jake Yount was USD's top finisher at 213 (69-73-71), good for 12 place overall.
By finishing ahead of Oklahoma State, it marks the first time in USD golf history that the Toreros bettered a top-10 program. Besides Yount's top team total of 213, the Toreros received solid play from Darrin Hall (t15 at 214; 72-70-72), Blake Trimble (t21 at 216; 74-72-70), Gunner Wiebe (t23 at 217; 70-77-70) and Jason Shano (t30 at 219; 69-82-68).
Added Mickelson, "To reach a milestone of beating Oklahoma State is a huge thing for this program. Not only did we beat a top 10 team in the country for the first time in school history, but we beat the most storied and successful collegiate golf program of all time. A great feat by these young guys, none of which are seniors."
