(Seaside, Calif.) - USD junior Grant Forrest
fired a final round 3-under par 69 to claim medalist honors at the Saint Mary's Invitational with a three-round total 7-under par 209 (71-69-69). Forrest, from North Berwick, Scotland, edged out two players from Cal - Michael Weaver (210) and Brandon Hagy (211). Weaver closed with a 70 while Hagy matched Forrest with a final round 69. Forrest closed out the tournament with birdies on 17 (par 3, 225 yards) & 18 (par 5, 527 yards) to secure the win, while Weaver finished with back-to-back pars.
Cal ran away with the team title at 854 (-10) at the two-day, three-round event being held at the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses in Seaside. In moving up to third place the Toreros fired a final round team total of 295 to finish at 886 (+22). Oregon finished two strokes better as the runner-up (884), with St. John's (887) and host Saint Mary's (889) rounding out the top-5 in the seventeen team field.
USD scoring was rounded out by freshman Alex Chiarella (T25 at 223; 77-72-74), senior Joe Carlson (T55 at 229; 78-73-78), senior Taylor Schmidt (T70 at 232; 78-73-81) and sophomore Skyler Finnell (T70 at 232; 83-75-74). USD freshman Nick Baines, playing as an individual, shot a final round 78 to finish with a three-round total of 244.
The Toreros are off until October 21-22 when they compete in the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, California. Last year the Toreros won the team title with a three-round team score of 8590 (-14).
