The 26th-ranked USD men's golf team, under the direction of 8th-year head coach Tim Mickelson, begins their 2011 spring schedule this coming weekend when they participate in the 2011 Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, California. The three-day event will take place at The Resort at Pelican Hill with Long Beach State University the host school.
This is the second straight year LBSU has hosted this event. This year's tournament will be held on the par-70, 6,900 yard Ocean North Course which will provide players with challenging holes and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. The 54-hole tournament will take place over three days (18 holes each day) beginning with opening round action on Sunday, Feb. 13th and final round play concluding on Tuesday, Feb. 15th. UCLA is the reigning champion.
San Diego and host Long Beach State will be joined by teams from Arizona State, Arkansas, Augusta State, Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego State, Tennessee, UT-Arlington, UC Davis, UCLA and Washington.
The Toreros, who have advanced to Nationals the past two seasons, and participated in three of the past four NCAA Regional's, will be led by seniors Gunner Wiebe (2010 WCC Champion), Scott Brace, Jason Shano, Scott Brace, Kenneth McCready, and junior Alex Ching.
Sunday and Monday play will begin at 7:00 a.m., while Tuesday's final day action will commence at 7:30 am. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
