USD men's golf coach Tim Mickelson received some good news this morning when he found out he was named the West Coast Conference Tri-Coach of the Year, marking his first honor in two short seasons with the Toreros. For the second time in WCC history, three coaches shared the Coach of the Year honors, as Mickelson, Pepperdine's John Geiberger, and Saint Mary's Scott Hardy were all recognized by their peers. The only other time this occurred was in 2002.
This season the Toreros turned in eight top-10 tourney finishes with a first place showing at the Fidelity National Title Intercollegiate over March 24-25. In that tournament held at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande, California, the Toreros beat out WCC foe Saint Mary's in a tiebreaker. USD finished with a team score of 874 (282-293-299) to beat out sixteen other teams. The Toreros also turned in a strong showing at Hawaii's Turtle Bay Intercollegiate (Nov. 1-2-3) where they finished 4th out of 19 teams.
Individually this season the Toreros have been paced by junior Jimmy Harris (74.74 scoring average; 31 rounds), junior Luke Antonelli (74.76 average; 34 rounds), freshman Bucky Coe (74.96 average; 28 rounds) and senior Michael Shelly (75.17 average; 29 rounds).
