(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's golf team, under the direction of first-year head coach Cory Scoggin, have received an invitation to the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The Toreros will be one of 14 teams in the Oklahoma Regional to be played May 17-19 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (par 72; 7,387 yards) in Norman, Oklahoma. The Toreros will be gunning to advance out of NCAA Regional's for the fourth straight year with a berth to Nationals.
The NCAA today announced the 14 teams and 5 individuals that will be participating in the Oklahoma Regional which is one of six NCAA Regional sites across the country. No. 10 seed San Diego will be joined by (1) Texas, (2) Georgia Tech, (3) Washington, (4) Florida State, (5) Oklahoma, (6) Saint Mary's College - CA, (7) Illinois, (8) Middle Tennessee, (9) South Carolina, (11) Arizona, (12) Sacramento State, (13) IUPUI, and (14) Loyola-Chicago.
Joining the competition will be the following five individuals - Martin Simonsen (UTEP), Kevin Lucas (Nevada), Mitchell McLeroy (Stephen F. Austin), Scott Willman (Nebraska) and Alfred Kerstis (UALR). Following 54-holes of competition, the top five teams and top individual not from one of those five teams will advance to Nationals May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club (par 71; 7,279 yards) in Pacific Palisades, California.
There are six Regional sites that total 81 teams and 45 individuals. Three of the sites have 13 teams and 10 individuals competing, and the other three sites will have 14 teams and 5 individuals.
The USD Toreros, currently ranked 60th in the nation by Golfstat.com, will be making their fifth straight appearance and sixth trip in the last seven years to NCAA Regional's. The Toreros are paced by senior Alex Ching (Honolulu, HI), who is currently ranked 34th (Golfstat.com) in the nation and is a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year (2011 & 2012). Ching owns a scoring average of 70.52 (36 rounds) and earned medalist honors at the San Diego Intercollegiate and Fresno State Lexus Classic. He is followed in scoring by freshman Grant Forrest of North Berwick, Scotland (72.25 scoring average; 36 rounds) who was selected the 2012 WCC Freshman of the Year.
