(San Diego, CA) - The USD golf team had two players advance out of U.S. Amateur qualifying tournaments to earn bids to the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championships to be held August 23-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two Toreros to advance are junior Gunner Wiebe (Denver, CO) and sophomore Alex Ching (Honolulu, HI). Junior Kenneth McCready (Placerville, CA) played well at his qualifier in Oregon but missed out on advancing by just one stroke.
Wiebe was the first Torero to advance after he totaled a two-round score of 131 at Ptarmigan Country Club in Ft. Collins, Colorado on July 27th. Wiebe fired a 68, and closed with an outstanding 63 to better runner-up Steve Ziegler by 5 strokes. On July 29th, Ching totaled a two-round score of 134 at the Honolulu Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. He carded rounds of 66 and 68 to earn the only bid out of the Hawaii qualifier. His total was 4 strokes better than runner-up Sean Mackawa.
Head Coach Tim Mickelson, who recently turned in a top-10 performance at the prestigious Porter Cup tournament, will attempt to earn one of three bids to the U.S. Amateur when he competes at The Farms Golf Club on August 4th.
