Sept. 11, 2010
The USD men's golf team, under the direction of 8th-year head coach Tim Mickelson, will enter the 2010-11 campaign as consensus top-25 preseason picks for the first time in school history. The Toreros rank #21 in Golfweek, and at #22 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Preseason Division I Coaches Poll. Oklahoma State is No. 1 in both polls. This year's club returns every player from last year's squad that won five tournaments, finished in the top-5 in 10 of 13 events, and closed out their impressive season with an 8th place tie at Nationals.
In addition to advancing to the NCAA Nationals for the past two seasons, including the school's first ever appearance in 2009 and an 8th overall finish in 2010, Mickelson has guided the program to the NCAA Regionals in three straight seasons and four of the last five seasons. The Toreros even vaulted their national ranking to as high as #25 entering the 2010 NCAA National Championships.
This past summer four Toreros advanced to the U.S Amateur Championships, with Gunner Wiebe and Alex Ching advancing out of stroke play to match play. Ching, who tied for 2nd at Nationals, reached the 3rd round of Match Play. Wiebe, who won two tournaments last season (WCC, Wyoming Cowboy Classic), played well in stroke play but was unable to advance past the first round of Match Play.
The Toreros begin play on Sept. 19-20 at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
