SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego made their first ever meeting with Ohio State memorable with a 2-0 shutout over the Buckeyes on Friday evening from Torero Stadium. Elijah Galbraith-Knapp and Joey Dei Rossi found the back of the net for USD, who outshot Ohio State 19-9 on the night.
USD controlled the ball for much of the game, putting pressure on Buckeye keeper Alex Ivanov with eight shots on goal. The Toreros (1-2-0) had plenty of opportunities through the contest but didn't notch their first goal until the 49th minute when Galbraith-Knapp took a chip feed on the near right wing from Patrick Wallen and pushed it past Ivanov for his first score of the season.
Dei Rossi followed in the 77th minute when he found himself directly in front of an empty net after a low cross from Connor Brandt was deflected by a diving Ivanov and bounced around inside the six-yard box until Dei Rossi punched it home. It was Dei Rossi's first goal of the season as well.
Ohio State (1-3-1) came alive in the second half with seven shots but was unable to get much offensive momentum going.
Wallen's seven shots led all players, while USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo (1-2-0) recorded two saves on the night. Ivanov (1-1-1) registered six saves of his own.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they meet Houston Baptist for a 5:00 pm contest at San Diego State's Sports Deck.
