SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Goals from Dan Delgado and Sergio Carranza lifted USD to a 2-0 win over the University at Albany Great Danes Friday evening at Torero Stadium. The Torero offense lit up the field with 13 shots as the Danes struggled to find the net.
"This is a really good win for the guys," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "They played well together out there tonight and I am happy for the win."
Sophomore midfielder Dan Delgado connected in the 7th minute from 15 yards out for San Diego. Daniel Meade set up the play dribbling through center field with an eye on Delgado sprinting up the far side. Delgado entered the box and cut towards the middle as Meade sent in a pass. Delgado dribbled through traffic and fired off a quick shot past diving Danes keeper Adrian Foncette for the 1-0 lead.
With the first half winding down, sophomore forward Sergio Carranza found the net from inside the six yard box. freshman forward Sergio Lopez brought the ball down field for USD passing it off to sophomore midfielder Christian Duke deep in Albany territory. Duke sent an arcing ball over the Albany defense to Sergio Carranza who connected in a header past Foncette lifting San Diego to a 2-0 lead.
San Diego dominated the shots category 13-0 and had a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. Torero goalkeeper Michael D'Arrigo had a quiet night in the box with no goals and no saves since USD's defense wouldn't let anything by them.
The Toreros improve to 2-3-1 in the non-conference part of the season. They will host Houston Baptist on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. in Torero Stadium.
