MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team posted a 3-2 victory at Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Dan Delgado led the Torero offense with a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 81st minute that helped USD (3-6-0, 1-1-0 WCC) earn their first conference victory of the season and snap a four-game skid. Blake Milton also chipped in with his first goal as a Torero.
A slow first half of action that saw both teams combine for only five shots in the period changed when USD got on the board first with Delgado's goal in the 21st minute where he connected in the top right corner off a free kick from 25 yards out. Milton followed that as time was winding down in the first half when he scored in the 41st minute to put the Toreros up 2-0. Milton took advantage of a miscue by SMC keeper Andre Rawls that resulted in a one-on-one that Milton converted for the score.
The Toreros would hold onto that lead until deep into the second half when the Gaels (4-2-3, 0-1-1 WCC) rallied back with two quick goals to tie the score. The first of which came when Austin Allison fired a cross into the left corner at the 79:04 mark that put SMC on the board. Trevor Newquist then followed that with another goal at 79:56 that tied the game at 2-2.
Delgado wasted no time in knocking in the game-winner when he scored 39 seconds after Newquist's goal with an assist from Conor McFadden to put the Toreros up 3-2, where they closed out the game.
USD held a slight edge in shots on the day with nine to SMC's eight. Drew Ilijevski (1-1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season, recording two saves in the process. Rawls (4-2-3) took the loss while tallying three saves.
The Toreros continue WCC play when they host Portland at Torero Stadium on Oct. 5th for a 7:00 pm contest.
