SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team wrapped up their road trip with a 1-0 victory over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs. The game-winner came from freshman midfielder James Cohn in the second half.

San Diego remains undefeated in West Coast Conference play as they improve to 7-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs fall to 4-5-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the WCC.

The score still 0-0 at halftime, San Diego returned from the break looking to score. The Toreros won a corner kick around the 58th minute. Stephen Posa lined up the corner kick from the left side. San Diego's Marcello Carminatti made contact with a header sending the ball up into the air. Cory Norris then hit the crossbar with another header as the ball went loose. USD scrambled for another shot as Cohn went diving in for a header making contact among the flying cleats, which went in lifting the Toreros to the 1-0 lead.

San Diego recorded 11 shots in the match, seven of which were on goal. The Bulldogs recorded seven shots, two of which were on target. Gonzaga goalkeeper Scott Barnum tallied five saves to Kelin Briones' two saves of the match. San Diego took seven corner kicks to Gonzaga's five.

"We played well and had a good week end," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "We had some adversity and we were able to find a way to overcome that adversity. I haven't had too many teams come up to the Northwest and get two Wins in the fashion they did."

USD jumps into first place in the West Coast Conference standings with their 3-0-0 record. Saint Mary's managed to defeat San Francisco in overtime to remain at 2-0-1 in conference. The No. 18 Portland Pilots defeated LMU 3-1 holding in third place at 2-1-1 in conference.

 

 

The Toreros return home to prepare for more WCC action. They open a three-match homestand starting with Saint Mary's on Friday October 16, followed by Santa Clara on October 18.
