LOS ANGELES, Calif.- Needing a win to stay alive in the quest for a West Coast Conference title, the University of San Diego men's soccer team found one with a 1-0 shutout at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Conor McFadden put USD on the board in the eighth minute and the Torero defense did the rest.
McFadden took a cross from Stephen Posa, who sent it in from the left wing, and pushed it past LMU keeper Jack McCormack from about 10 yards out for the eventual game-winner and his third goal of the season.
Both teams were even with eight shots apiece on the day, but it was a tale of close calls on both sides as each team had a handful of opportunities throughout the contest that could have made for a much different outcome. LMU (7-11-1, 5-5-1 WCC) had three good looks in the waning minutes of the contest but the USD defense held firm and kept the shutout intact.
Torero keeper Michael D'Arrigo notched three saves on the day while earning his second win of the season. McCormack recorded two saves en route to the loss.
McFadden and Patrick Wallen each tallied two shots in the match, while LMU's Fernando Barba led all players with three shots. The Lions held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
With the win the Toreros (9-8-1, 6-4-1 WCC) complete the season sweep of LMU and now move on to face Saint Mary's in their final regular season match. Heading into Wednesday's contest, the Toreros were one of four teams tied for second place, just one point behind conference-leader Saint Mary's.
USD heads up to Moraga, Calif. on Sunday, Nov. 13th for a 2:00 pm contest that could determine the conference champion.
