LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 loss at Loyola Marymount Wednesday evening at Sullivan Field. Keegan Smith and Sergio Lopez each netted goals for the Toreros in a game that saw four of the five total goals scored within a nine minute stretch that spanned the first and second halves.
Adrien Perez scored a pair of goals for LMU (12-4-2, 8-2-1) as he put the Lions ahead 1-0 in the 36th minute when he tapped a short pass from Pedro Velasquez into the far post. Perez then gave LMU a 2-0 lead five minutes later after taking advantage of a fumbled ball by USD keeper Michael D'Arrigo and knocked it in for the score in the 41st minute.
The lead didn't last long however, as USD (6-9-4, 2-6-3) cut into the lead when Lopez scored his third goal of the season less than a minute later as he converted a cross from the left wing by Darragh Vieyra for the score.
With LMU leading 2-1 at halftime, the Toreros wasted no time in evening the score at 2-2 as Smith took a cross from Blake Milton on the left wing for his fourth goal of the year just 28 seconds into the second half.
The contest would stay knotted at 2-2 until the 68th minute, when Velasquez netted the game winner off a cross from Perez on the left wing.
LMU was able to control the ball on USD's side of the pitch for much of the game, outshooting the Toreros 20-11 on the night. Play began to get physical in the second half as USD was whistled for 17 fouls, compared to just three on LMU in the second half. Milton and Thomas Fiskerstrand were each issued yellow cards in the waning minutes of the second frame as well.
D'Arrigo (6-8-4) took the loss for the Toreros but recorded five saves in the match, while Paul Blanchette picked up the win for LMU and tallied four saves of his own.
This was the second contest this season in which USD has challenged LMU, who came into the week in first place in the West Coast Conference standings. The teams tied 2-2 in their last meeting at USD on Oct. 2.
USD closes out the 2013 season at Santa Clara on Sunday, Nov. 17 with a 1 pm kickoff.
