SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Former University of San Diego midfielder Dan Delgado was drafted in the second round of the 2013 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes on Thursday afternoon. Delgado was the 33rd overall selection in the two-round draft.
"It's definitely been a crazy day," said Delgado. "I'm really excited. I didn't expect it today. I kept getting phone calls before they announced it from San Jose so I was hoping that they would actually get me but I didn't really expect it. But then right before they announced it I got a text message from them saying `Welcome to San Jose'. I know they have a guy that played for LMU when I was a freshman and sophomore and I liked the way he played and I think I play similar to him, so hopefully I can play a little bit my first year. Actually, I want to play a lot, so I'll just keep working hard and see how it goes."
Delgado (Escondido, Calif.) wrapped up his USD career by leading the Toreros (14-9-0) in scoring this season. His nine goals were not only a career high, but were also the third-most in the conference this season, while his 10 assists led the WCC and were the eighth-most in the NCAA. The 28 points he tallied overall were also the third-most in the conference.
Delgado played a key role in helping lead the Toreros to their second NCAA quarterfinals appearance in team history this season with a goal and five assists in four postseason contests. In addition to being an All-WCC first-teamer this year, Delgado was named first-team All-Far West Region and the WCC's Player of the Month for November as well as a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month.
"It's a great tribute to Danny's body of work here at USD," said USD head coach Seamus McFadden. "He had a fantastic year and we're all really happy for him. He also represents our program so well because his getting drafted really shows the fruits of his labor over his career. He's going to be a dynamic player and San Jose is a good, athletic team that features a style of play that I think will really be a good fit for Danny."
The Earthquakes are coming off a franchise-best record of 19-6-9 in 2012 and the club's second Supporters' Shield. San Jose boasted the best record in the MLS last season and led the league in scoring as a team with 72 goals. Quakes head coach Frank Yallop was named 2012 MLS Coach of the Year. San Jose has four preseason contests on the slate, with the first set for Feb. 2 vs. the Houston Dynamo. The club opens the 34-game regular season schedule at home on Mar. 3 against Real Salt Lake.
Coincidentally, USD assistant coach Brian Quinn was the Earthquakes' head coach from 1997-99 where he was the youngest coach in MLS history when he took over. The franchise was called the Clash when Quinn started his tenure there.
The Earthquakes selected Georgetown defender Tommy Muller with their first pick of the draft (15th overall). Delgado and the Toreros lost to Muller and the Hoyas in the NCAA Quarterfinals in Washington D.C. this past season.
Delgado was one of two WCC players to be selected on Thursday, joining Santa Clara's Erik Hurtado (5th overall). This is the second-consecutive year a Torero has earned an opportunity in the MLS after Stephen Posa was selected by the LA Galaxy in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft.
