LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego was in action on day one of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Wednesday afternoon from the campus of UCLA. The Toreros won seven matches altogether on the day.
Five Toreros competed in qualifying singles with three moving on to the singles main draw. Ciaran Fitzgerald had a first round bye before going on to top Loyola Marymount's Daniel Simko 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16 and earn a spot in the main draw.
Jakob Karnopp advanced to the main draw by way of a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Concordia's Micah Groom in the round of 32 and a 6-3, 6-4 win over UC San Diego's Trevor Dell in the round of 16.
Victor Pugliese also advanced to the main draw after he posted a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Gary Yam of Azusa Pacific in the round of 32 and bounced back from losing the first set 6-0 to UC Santa Barbara's Ziad Sultan to take the second and third sets 6-2, 13-11.
Andrew Carlisle split his two matches on the day. Carlisle defeated Nikki Rae of BYU 7-6, 7-5 in the round of 32 but dropped his round of 16 match to David Sofaer of Pepperdine 6-1, 6-1.
Andrew Raphaelson defeated Nick Northcott of Loyola Marymount 4-6, 6-1, 14-12 in his first round matchup, before going on to lose to Jan Meyer of Azusa Pacific 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Day two on Thursday will consist of the first rounds of singles main draw play and doubles qualifying action.
