Kaila Mangrum is entering her third season with the women's basketball program, and first as Director of Basketball Operations for head coach Cindy Fisher. Her responsibilities include: assisting with the day to day operations of the program.
In her third season with the Toreros in 2012-13, Mangrum helped lead to an overall record of 22-10, the second most wins in program history, and reached the second round of the WNIT. USD also had a 12-4 mark in the WCC, good for sole possession of second place in the WCC, and San Diego managed to reach the championship game of the WCC Tournament. This marked only the second time in program history that USD has made back-to-back postseason appearances. USD did all of this despite losing a pair of 1,000-point scorers, and the team's leading rebounder from the previous season. Mangrum helped the Toreros produced the WCC Freshman of the Year in Maya Hood, and had three total players earn All-WCC honors, highlighted by first-teamer Amy Kame.
In only her second season on the coaching staff, Mangrum helped the Toreros soar to new heights, and reach uncharted waters. USD posted a 26-9 overall record, and a 12-4 mark in the WCC, both win totals were program bests. The Toreros finished second place in the WCC with NCAA Tournament participant BYU, then went on to record the program's first postseason win, as USD defeated Cal State Northridge in the first round of the WNIT, 60-58 inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD was not in uncharted waters, but this didn't slow down the Torero machine, as San Diego advanced to the Final Four of the WNIT. USD reached the Final Four by defeating Pacific at home, then picked up road wins against Texas Tech, and Washington, before falling to eventual WNIT champion Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. This is now considered the best season in program history.
Kaila had a storied career in a Torero uniform from 2005-09. As Coach Fisher's first signee at USD, Mangrum played an instrumental role in elevating Torero basketball. She was part of the biggest turn around in program history, and contributed to the first 20-win season at USD. Mangrum also helped lead USD to back-to-back post season appearances as a player. During Kaila's sophomore season, USD earned its first appearance in the WNIT and claimed a spot in the NCAA tournament the following season. Kaila represented USD at the highest level as a student-athlete both on and off the court. Her spirit, work ethic and positive attitude was recognized by the coaching staff when Kaila was named the recipient of the prestigious "Maggie Dixon Award" three years in a row.
"When Coach Fisher offered me the graduate assistant position, I immediately had a flashback to the day she asked me to play for her here at USD," said Mangrum. "I did not hesitate in my decision to accept the position and could not have asked for a better opportunity. I am beyond excited about my new journey here. I am looking forward to the season and continuing to help the Toreros grow and succeed."
Mangrum returns to the Toreros after spending this past year working for Ashford University in admissions.
