Klara Wischer scored 13 points and hauled in seven rebounds
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (12-7, 4-3) defeated Portland (6-13, 1-5) 72-54 Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros had a hot hand all night, shooting 53 percent from the field while holding the Pilots to just 38 percent.
The Toreros were, once again, led by junior Amy Kame. After scoring 14 points in the first half, Kame finished with a game-high 16 points to go along with her four assists. Freshman Maya Hood continued her impressive rookie campaign, scoring 12 points, and senior Klara Wischer chipped in 13 points to round out the Toreros' double-digit scorers. Sophomore Katelyn McDaniel hauled in a team-high nine rebounds
Both teams came out slow and struggled with turnovers and the game remained close for the majority of the first half. The score was tied at 25 with 4:47 remaining but the Toreros were able to close out the first half on a 12-3 run to take a 37-28 lead in to the locker room at halftime.
The Toreros' strong defensive efforts continued in the second half as the Toreros forced 20 total turnovers and outrebounded them 38-31, which helped them open up a 20 point lead at 59-39 with 9:21 remaining. The Toreros would be in cruise control for the rest of the game, coasting to a 72-54 win
The Toreros, who are currently fifth in the conference at 4-3, look to keep pace in the WCC when they travel to Malibu on Saturday to take on the Pepperdine Waves (4-12, 1-4). Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.
