SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (19-9, 11-4) cruised past San Francisco (10-17, 3-11) 62-52 Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros have won eight of their past nine games and now move in to second place in the WCC, holding a half game lead over BYU (19-8, 10-4).
As the Toreros celebrated their seniors Julia Bennett and Klara Wischer, it was their underclassmen that led the charge. Sophomore Katelyn McDaniel scored a game-high 19 points on 7-9 shooting and freshman Maya Hood stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, and six steals.
After trailing for the first ten minutes of the contest, the Toreros took a 17-15 lead with 7:38 remaining in the first half. USD would lead the rest of the way, building a 31-22 lead by halftime behind McDaniel's 11 first half points.
Playing behind tough defense, the Toreros held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half. USD was able to hold USF to 33.3 shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers.
Senior Julia Bennett got the start in her last game at the JCP and Klara Wischer scored seven points while dishing out five assists and hauling in five rebounds.
The Dons were led by Mel Khlok's 14 points. Zhane Dikes scored 13 points and Taylor Proctor rounded out the double-digit scorers for USD with 11 points.
BYU lost to Gonzaga earlier in the day, giving the Toreros a half game lead in the WCC. However BYU has two more games remaining and holds the tiebreaker with USD. The top four teams in the conference receive a bye in the WCC Tournament.
The Toreros close out WCC play Saturday March 2 at Santa Clara (13-13, 5-8). Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
