SANTA CLARA, Calif. -Behind five Toreros scoring in double figures, and a huge second half surge, the University of San Diego women's basketball team recorded their 20th win of the season, with a 84-66 win over Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon at the Leavy Center.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 20-8 overall, move to 12-4 in the WCC, and have secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament. This is the highest seed USD has ever received in the WCC Tournament. San Diego will open play at the WCC Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. This also marks the first time in program history the Toreros have recorded back-to-back 20-win season. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 14-15 overall and ?-? in the WCC.
“This is just a credit to our kids, who have gotten better ever game,” stated head coach Cindy Fisher, who just recorded her 199th career win. “The team has been warriors, and worked so hard all year long and deserve this seeding. They know what it takes to win, and do the little things well. The are winners and competitors, and 100% of the credit goes to them.”
Senior forward Klara Wischer recorded a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers, and she pulled down 10 rebounds to post a double-double. Katelyn McDaniel scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while Felicia Wijenberg added in 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Maya Hood had 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting and Malina Hoodrecorded a career-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. As a team, USD shot .544 from the field and out rebounded the Broncos 32-28.
In the first half, the Broncos jumped out to an early lead, as a Ruta Zurauskyte jumper ignited a 10-2 SCU run over the first 4:10 of the game. A Klara Wischer
jumper then sparked a 12-2 Torero run over the next five minutes of action to give USD the momentum and a 14-12 lead with 9:05 to go.
After the Broncos pulled even with the Toreros at 14-all, a Malina Hoodjumper ignited a 6-0 San Diego run to give USD back some breathing room and a 20-14 lead with 6:52 to go.
The two teams then began to trade basket-for-basket over the remainder of the frame, and SCU would manage to close the gap down to one at 30-29 heading into half time.
San Diego went on a 7-0 run over one minute in the early part of the second half to get out on top by nine points at 40-31. Hood scored five points during the run. A jumper by Zurauskyte ended the run at the 16:33 mark. The Toreros got the lead to double-digits for the first time on a layup by Hood at the 14:30 mark but the Broncos answered with a free throw and a layup to make the score 45-38 with just under 13 minutes remaining. A three by Fulps with 10:42 left got the deficit down to six points but the Toreros were able to answer and stretch their lead. Wischer knocked down two free throws with 8:03 left to put San Diego up 60-47. After Brooke Gallaway made two free throws, San Diego went on a 6-0 over 56 seconds to push the lead out to 66-49. Fulps hit two free throws at the 6:26 mark to end the run and make the score 66-51. Gilday followed with a jumper on the next Bronco possession. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way and San Diego closed out the 84-66 win.
