SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team held its first official practice today for the 2012-13 season at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
USD is coming off the best season in program history, in which San Diego posted a program-best 26-9 overall record, won the most WCC games in program history with 12, and they not only recorded its first ever postseason win, with a 60-58 victory over Cal State Northridge, but they reached the final four of the WNIT.
This season's squad features junior guard and All-WCC returner Amy Kame, who had a break-out sophomore season in which she was the team's third leading scorer with a 11.4 ppg average, to go along with an astonishing 84% free throw shooting percentage. Kame also recorded a career-high of 25 points in the WCC Tournament last season against Portland, one of 18 games in which she scored in double figures.
Also highlighting the returners is sophomore post sensation Sophia Ederaine. Ederaine really came on strong at the end of the season, and she made her presence known in the paint. In the Elite Eight game of the WNIT, Ederaine recorded a career-high with nine blocked shots, completely shutting down Washington's All-Conference and leading scorer Regina Rogers.
USD also welcomes back a pair of seniors in Julia Bennett, and Klara Wisher. Both seniors are excited about the season, and are expected to help provide strong leadership for the upcoming season. In all, USD returns nine letter winners and two starters from last season's record setting team.
Along with these exciting returners, three new faces will bless the women's basketball program this season in the form of twins Malina Hood and Maya Hood, as well as JC transfer Alysse Barlow.
Head Coach Cindy Fisher, the 2012 WCC Coach of the Year, is excited to get the season underway, and has her team poised to bring home the program's first ever WCC regular-season championship, and a return to the NCAA Tournament.
USD opens the regular-season on Nov. 10 with a 2 p.m. game against Cal State San Marcos inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
