SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Torero women's rowing team started-off their spring season with a solid win this Saturday (Feb. 23) in the Row for the Cure, a 4.5K race benefiting the Susan G. Komen foundation. The University of San Diego's varsity eight had a strong showing, taking first place, over SDSU by eighteen seconds and UC San Diego by forty-five seconds with a time of 15:22. The Toreros also came up with a win in the Varsity 4 event with a time of 18:49.
"It was a great day to get out and race. I was proud of the team for competing well and keeping their composure throughout the long morning," said head coach Kim Cupini.
Prior to Row for the Cure, the Toreros participated in a scrimmage against the University of Southern California, as well as local rivals SDSU and UCSD. The scrimmage took place on Mission Bay, involving both varsity and novice crews from all schools.
In the first varsity eight, USD raced well against the Trojans and the Aztecs in five 5-minute pieces. USC held the lead for the scrimmage pieces, but USD followed consistently in second for 4 of the 5 pieces, over San Diego State and UC San Diego.
The varsity four maintained a competitive pace holding a second place finish ahead of SDSU and UCSD, with USC in the lead, in each of their four 5-minute pieces.
"It was an invaluable experience to race a team like USC and increase the level of competition throughout the program," Cupini said. "We need to continue to train hard throughout the season and are looking forward to our races this spring"
