SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After a beautiful Saturday of racing in the sunshine, the Toreros returned to the San Diego Crew Classic for the final day of racing. In the Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup Grand Final, the Toreros brought home the trophy placing first in the Varsity Grand final with a time of 7:05.10.
"This success is one our entire squad can be proud of," said Head Coach Kim Cupini. "All of our crews train to win day in and day out and continue to push one another to reach that next level. It was a great race to watch and a great win for San Diego."
San Diego solidified the win during the second half of the race. The Toreros overtook Sacramento State and jumped into second place on the heels of the Sooners. With 800 meters to go, USD and Oklahoma battled for the lead. At the 500-meter mark, San Diego pulled ahead of the Sooners crossing the finish line almost a boat length ahead of the competition. The support of parents, students and USD faculty at the racecourse made the team's celebration even more memorable.
"It finally clicked at the end that we had to race our race, which meant going back to our training, fitness, and strength," said Torero Christine Holloway. "In our hearts we wanted the win most that day"
The three other San Diego crews also had a successful weekend at the Crew Classic. In the women's collegiate JV Petite final, USD finished in fourth place with a time of 7:12.34 defeating six other crews in this event. In the Novice A, USD secured an open water victory in the petite final against several west coast competitors. The second Novice 8 finished second in their final-only event just behind Minnesota. Both Freshman crews gained a great deal of racing experience thoughout the weekend.
With the Toreros undefeated varsity 8, the team is looking forward to the berg cup on April 10 as well as the competition against Oregon State University and UCLA on April 17. Their final races of the season will be at Lake Natoma where the Toreros will battle for the West Coast Conference Championship title.
