PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The University of San Diego women's rowing team traveled to the East Coast for the historic Dad Vail Regatta on Philadelphia's Schuyllkill River. The Second Varsity Eight squad recorded a stellar second place finish in the grand finale for the Coleman D. Boylan Trophy on Saturday afternoon at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Varsity Eight squad made it into the grand finale race for the Evelyn Bergman Trophy finishing in fourth place.

Preliminaries for both squads were held on Friday with the course shortened to 1500 meter for the time trials due to inclement weather. The two squads both finished in the Top-5. The Varsity Eight squad recorded a time of 4:37.64 taking the fourth best time out of the 30 teams entered in the preliminaries, and captured one of the 18 spots to advance to the semifinals. Their mark was only seven seconds behind the first place time of 4:30.99 by Grand Valley. The Second Varsity Eight boat finished in 5:14.03, only four seconds off the first place time of 5:10.43 by UMass. Their fourth place mark out of 14 teams in the preliminaries automatically advanced them to the finals on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Second Varsity Eight squad faced Buffalo, UMass, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Purdue in the finals. San Diego raced well against tough competition battling their way to a second place finish in a time of 7:01.60, only three seconds off Buffalo's first place time of 6:58.08. UMass took third with 7:02.80, Purdue finished fourth (7:05.06), Connecticut took fifth (7:16.86), and North Carolina took sixth (7:19.87).

The Varsity Eight squad advanced to the semifinals on day two of competition. The Toreros were scheduled in heat III with Tulsa, Drexel, North Carolina UMass, and Connecticut. USD easily finished in first place with a mark of 6:37.30, a three second lead over Drexel who finished in second place at 6:40.34. UMASS finished third with a time of 6:45.494, Connecticut took fourth place (6:46.692), Tulsa finished in fifth place (6:50.206), and North Carolina finished in sixth place (6:54.815).

In the grand finale for the Evelyn Bergman Trophy, San Diego raced well competing strong against solid competition. The Toreros fell short of first place crossing the finish line in fourth place with a mark of 6:50.25, nine second off the leader Grand Valley who finished in 6:41.20. Buffalo finished in second place (6:45.21), Saint Joseph's took third (6:46.77), Drexel finished in fifth place (6:53.52), and Purdue finished in sixth place (6:54.17).

The team returned home to San Diego completing a successful 2009 campaign.
